condition that they remained together. From 1910 a suite of rooms at the Tate was devoted to some of the oil paintings, but it was not until the Clore Gallery was opened in 1987 that the entire bequest, including thousands of studies, was made readily a
vailable to the public. The extension was designed by James Stirling, one of BritainÆs foremost contemporary architects. It is a design of considerable character, yet the way it relates to the main building is remarkably harmonious.\par
